The institute promotes ethno-anthropological Italian heritage through the documentation, study and divulgation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage.

The National Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions exhibition section of the institute was created after the Italian exhibition on ethnography held in Rome in 1911 to celebrate the 50th anniversary Italian. The founder, ethnologist Lamberto Loria, realised after several expeditions in non-European countries that ethnographic research was required to document the culture of a country that at the time was undergoing changes due to industrialisation and emigration from rural areas. The Loria programme gave a central role to the museum, underlining the importance of the study of national ethnography as a means to understand the cultural history of a nation.
