Cerralbo Palace, now Museum, was built between 1884 and 1892 in a historicist style with classical echoes, also shared by its garden. It contains the collections of Enrique de Aguilera y Gamboa, 17th Marquis of Cerralbo (1845–1922), a politician, historian, collector and pioneer of archaeology in Spain. After his death, he bequeathed his collection to the Spanish state. Paintings, furniture, clocks, porcelain, lamps, sculptures, arms and armour, textiles, books, coins and archaeological objects are displayed in the various rooms where the first inhabitants of the palace led their daily lives. Cerralbo Museum also has the distinction of being one of the few buildings in Madrid that shows the original decorative ambience of an aristocratic residence, thoroughly restored in the first decade of the 21st century.
