The Şirket-i Hayriyye was the name of a steam boat joint-stock company which carried passengers and cargo on the Bosporus from 1854 to 1945. The company was established with the approval of the Sultan Abdulmecid. The steam boats belonging to company were sent from European countries, primarily Britain. The first captains of this boats were almost all of Rûm origin. After the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, the company and its goods were purchased by the state.
