Palais du Bardo
This oil on canvas portrait from 1862 depicts the King Vittorio Emanuele II (1861–1878). Fair-skinned with blue eyes and brown hair, the king is dressed in official uniform, with a black jacket and silver buttons and a silver belt. The Ordre du Sang, the Nichan al-Dam and the Annunziata medals are on the left of his chest. A royal red cape is draped over his shoulders, bordered by gold decorations, a white fur collar and lapels embellished with black feathers. A gold crown decorated with red and green strasses sits is on his left, and red curtains with tassels and tiebacks in the same colour form the backdrop. This painting is evidence of an active diplomatic relationship between the Palais du Bardo and the European chancelleries.
