The fez was more or less the most significant element of the uniform worn by soldiers of Bosnian-Herzegovinian regiments of the Austro-Hungarian Army, who earned a reputation for bravery and loyalty during World War I. While the fez was in use for all common soldiers, only Muslim officers were allowed to wear the fez instead of the normal black officer's cap. The colour of the fez was changed during the war from red to pike grey.
