The expansion of the city of Tunis necessitated the construction of a large modern port which would be accessible to large-tonnage ships. Thus, in the early years of the French protectorate, the port of Tunis, La Goulette, saw a sharp increase in traffic. As well as a fishing port, the primary function of La Goulette, it also became an industrial centre thanks to the construction of a power plant on the north side of the canal, which served the tramways and the electric railway going to the northern suburbs. Finally, on the eve of the war, La Goulette had also become a residential town, particularly popular in summer for its seaside resorts.
