Description:

Born in Tunis in 1876, Abdelaziz Thâalbi (Abdelaziz al-Thalibi) was a Tunisian politician. In 1920, he became the founder of the political party Destour, and participated in all the first fights of the nationalist movement. This activism caused him to be sent into exile in 1912, not for the first time, with six other nationalist politicians. In 1920 he wrote and published the manifesto La Tunisie Martyre with Ahmed Sakka, for which he was arrested on 31 July and taken to Tunis. However, feeling threatened there, he fled and left Tunisia once again in 1923. Destourian militants in Tunisia kept calling for his return, which finally happened in July 1937, 14 years after being forced into exile. However, upon his return he entered into conflict with Neo-Destour politicians, led by Bourguiba. He died on 1 October 1944, and his funeral was an opportunity for the Neo-Destour movement, as well as all the fringes of the nationalist movement to gather, and pay tribute to one of the founding fathers of Tunisian nationalism
