Description:

In April 1866, Carol of Hohenzollern was elected by plebiscite ruler of the United Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia. However, according to the Paris Convention of 1858, an act signed by the Ottoman Empire, Russia, Austria, Prussia, France, Great Britain and Sardinia, which established the internal organization of the Principalities, they were supposed to each have their own local prince. So, Carol’s election had to be recognized by the Sublime Porte, the sovereign power, and by the other Great Powers. Following negotiations held at Istanbul, in October sultan Abdul Aziz agreed to give his consent. Carol then travelled to Istanbul, where he was invested as ruler of the Principalities and was given by the sultan five Arabian horses and a sword decorated with 1140 brilliants and 46 diamonds.
