Description:

In the second half of the 19th century, French doctor Carol Davila played an important role in the development of the Romanian medical system. He came to Bucharest in 1853, sent by the French government at the request of Wallachian prince Barbu Stirbei who needed a specialist to form well trained Romanian doctors. Davila was named medic of the army and later general inspector of the country’s sanitary service and he was the founder of a medicine and pharmacy school. Among other decorations he received for his activity, he was awarded two Ottoman ones (the Orders of Medjidie and of Osmanie), the first for curing Ottoman soldiers who contracted cholera during the Ottoman occupation of Wallachia (1855), and the other for treating wounded Ottoman soldiers during the Russian-Ottoman war of 1877-1878.
