Nikola Karev (1877–1905) was one of the ideological leaders and organizers of the Uprising of Ilinden. The uprising broke out on the night of 2 August 1903. After taking over, Krushevo revolutionaries declared the Krushevo Republic on 3 August. The Headquarters of the uprising took the military control over the town. The other governing bodies were the Revolutionary Council, consisting of sixty of the most prominent citizens representing all nationalities, and the Government, consisting of six members. Vangel Dinu was the Prime Minister and Nikola Karev was the President of the Republic. Owing to the progressive socialist ideas of Nikola Karev and other revolutionaries, the Krushevo Republic was laid on truly democratic foundations and republican principles. Karev announced the Krushevo Manifesto as a truly democratic document addressing all nationalities living in Macedonia, regardless of their religion, envisioning equal rights for everyone.
