The Slav-Macedonian Scientific Literary Society was established in St. Petersburg on 16 December 1903, acting under the patronage of the St. Petersburg Slav Charitable Society. Its founders were Krste Petkov Misirkov (1874–1926) and Dimitija Chupovski, who worked actively on the recognition of Macedonian as distinct Slavic language and the opening of native-language schools for children in Macedonia. The Society, also known as the Macedonian Colony in St. Petersburg, gathered many distinguished Macedonian writers, poets and publicists. Its extensive scientific and literary activities have brought about explicit formulation of the Macedonian national program. The Society largely contributed to issuing a periodical publication in Macedonian and Russian language called “Makedonski Golos” (“Macedonian Voice"). It played an important role in the national awakening of Macedonians and bringing forth the issue of the Macedonian autonomy in the international community.
