Khalil al-Khuri was born in Choiefat ('Aley) in October 1836. He founded the first non-official newspaper in Arabic, Hadiqat al-Akhbar (the garden of news) in 1858. He also wrote a collection of poems, some of which were later translated into French. He died in October, 1907.
