Telemaco Signorini was part of the group of artists known as The Macchiaioli Movement, a group drawn to colour and nature. After his studies at the Academy of Florence, he started painting from real life and spent some time in Paris, where he met Corot and the painters from the School of Barbizon. Back in Italy the artist went to Tuscany and Liguria. He also travelled frequently to France, England and Scotland, where he was well known. Signorini liked painting urban scenes and cityscapes. The artist developed urban themes with a unique emphasis, matching together vivid descriptions, social and humanitarian features and cultural issues.
