Portrait of Ismail, Khedive of Egypt (1830–1895), who financed the construction of the Suez Canal. Because of the enormous costs of the building and his reform measures, Egypt's debt rose from three million pounds sterling to 100 million pounds sterling. In 1875 Egypt was bankrupt and Ismail Pasha was forced to sell 176,602 shares to Great Britain for 3,976,582 pounds sterling. Egypt came under financial control of France and Great Britain.
