History:

This cathedral was completed in 1863 and has been visited by a great many pilgrims. It was restored by the Archdiocese in 1994, following a number of damages the structure bore during the Civil War. The works began in late 2003 and were completed in May 2006.

Description:

The Saint Elias Cathedral, which can be found by the al-Najma Square in Downtown Beirut, is affiliated with the Greek Melkite Catholic Church in Lebanon. The cathedral was considered remarkable at the time of its completion in 1863, due to the architect's combination of Byzantine architecture with beautiful other decoration. It is also known for its neo-classical interior, marble iconostasis, Gothic arcs, and the celestial oculi.
