Louis Dupré (1789–1837) visited Greece in 1819. He exhibited Greek subjects at the Salons of 1827, 1831, 1833 and 1855. In 1825 he published a set of colored lithographs of views and studies of costumes from Greece, entitled Voyages à Athènes et Constantinople. Dupré recorded his experiences of travel in the Levant in 1819 mainly through portraits of the people he met. In addition to the lithographs in this book, Dupré also produced loose broadsheet lithographed plates. Many of these are in the possession of the Cabinet des Estampes of the Bibliothèque Nationale. Much has been written on Dupré. Athenian Bride depicts the preparations of an Athenian wedding. The bride patiently waits as the groom is ritually shaved.
