Quinta da Regaleira is one of the most surprising of all Sintra’s monuments. Located on the outskirts of the town, it was built between 1904 and 1910 by A.A. Carvalho Monteiro as his favourite country estate. He commissioned this unique project with the Italian set-designer and architect Luigi Manini. The art and architecture of the mansion and the chapel, built in neo-Manueline style, were collocated with other buildings in the bosom of an Edenic garden. A “philosopher’s dwelling” par excellence, conveying a message addressed to those who are ready to engage in the adventure of self-knowledge, Quinta da Regaleira emerges from the Sintra cultural landscape as an example of the “total work of art” and as an expression of a new mythical territory, where philosophy, art and nature come together.
