Watercolour by Claude R. Conder, made during the Survey of Western Palestine, showing one of the members of the SWP at work with one of the expedition’s theodolites. The technology they used was the latest cutting edge equipment and techniques available to the Royal Engineers, far in advance on what was being used, for example, by the US Army Corps of Engineers of the day, as was demonstrated when Lieut. Steever, of the Corps of Engineers carried out a similar survey in Transjordan.
