Inspired by Layard’s discoveries, George Smith began to study cuneiform. His dedication was rewarded with the amazing discovery of a version of the Biblical Flood Story. The British Prime Minister came to his lecture. The news amazed the world. The Daily Telegraph financed an expedition to Nineveh to find the missing piece. Having found it, Smith died of fever on his way home.
