About The British Museum, London
7th century BC; acquisition date: 1825
BM 22502
Iraq
One of the first objects from Nineveh to reach the West. Studied by Rich’s secretary, Karl Bellino. Bellino was a talented scholar of Middle Eastern languages. His new style of copying set the standard for rigorous study of cuneiform. His life ended tragically short; he died of fever in Mosul in 1820. Many European explorers and excavators lost their lives in the Middle East to disease or one of many other dangers.
