Description:

The Great Exhibition of London, held at the Crystal Palace in 1851, was a notable event for the world for various reasons: It was the very first exhibition of this kind, and it was possible, for the first time, to gather and wonder at products from distant countries at the Crystal Palace, a futuristic building for the time and a symbol of the cosmopolitan nature of the United Kingdom.

Dickinson’s Comprehensive Pictures of the Great Exhibition of 1851 (published in 1854) is a famous collection of coloured illustrations of the Great Exhibition. The illustration displayed on this page, painted by Joseph Nash, shows the stands with the products of Ceylon and Malta, as well as those of British Channel Islands Guernsey and Jersey, and gives an accurate depiction of what the interior of the Crystal Palace looked like, and a vivid idea of the commercial (and artistic) exchanges this exhibition inaugurated.
