This illustration of the new Royal Stock Exchange was included in a book called The Great Metropolis, published in London by Thomas Holmes in 1851. The book was conceived as an illustrated collection of all the notable monuments in London, providing historical information about the city and about each monument. Although it looks like a tourist guide, it offers more than this kind of guide because it describes not just monuments, but also other landmarks that testify to the social and commercial development of the city. Among the landmarks illustrated and described, as well as the new Royal Stock Exchange, is the Crystal Palace, the site of the Universal Exhibition (the Great Exhibition) of 1851.
