This photograph shows the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem as it appeared in 1899. It was a typical destination for Christian pilgrims travelling from Europe and Russia. Christian pilgrimage was seen in many cases as a starting point to describe "exotic" places and the "Eastern" culture. Some Christian pilgrims described in their writings historical and cultural details and curiosities and their impressions of 19th century Palestinian society, the increasing number of pilgrims – especially Russian and Jews – and the institutions such as the Russian consulate, English and German churches and Latin monks that accommodated the Christian pilgrims.
