Description:

This reconstruction of a baghla was commissioned by His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi in 2004 to represent the most important and largest type of trading craft that plied the waters between the Gulf and India in the late 13th/ 19th century and the early 14th/ 20th century. Built by Emirati and Omani specialists, the vessel incorporates all the traditional elements of a baghla: a length of around 30 meters, two masts for lateen sails, its typically parrot-shaped stem head, its high square stern and its lavishly carved design. All these features were originally influenced by the design of Portuguese ships.
