Description:

This engraving shows a portrait of David Roberts (1796 – 1864), first completed in the 1840s by Charles Baugniet. Roberts is shown seated on an ancient plinth or capital, holding a drawing board and a pencil. A classical temple structure appears in the background on the left. David Roberts was a Scottish painter especially known for a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East produced during the 1840s from sketches he made during extensive tours of the region (1838–1839). These, and his large oil paintings of similar subjects, made him a prominent and highly influential Orientalist painter. Charles-Louis Baugniet (1814 - 1886), was a Belgian artist famous for the lithographing of portraits of prominent European figures.
