This image represents the vignette on the title page of Volume 3 to 'The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia' from drawings made on the spot by David Roberts, lithographed by Louis Haghe and published in six volumes by F.G. Moon in London between 1842-1845. It is entitled 'Temple of El Khasne, Petra' and shows the spectacular treasury of Petra as seen by travellers approaching the ancient city through the famous, steep and narrow ravine. Petra had remained forgotten until rediscovered by the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812. Subsequently, it became one of the romantic fascinations of European Orientalist artists and writers.Roberts visited Petra in early March 1839, and he wrote that it was 'probably one of the greatest challenges on earth to a painter'.
