Description:

This vignette depicts the façade of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, located on the spot where it is bellieved both the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his burial took place. David Roberts, the prominent Scottish Orientalist painter(1796-1864) visited at Easter time, when the square in front of the church was crowded with pilgrims and traders selling their wares. Nevertheless, he shows the scene not with contemporary life milling around the church, but enlivened only with his usual repertoire of carefully staged, oriental types. Originally, the church was accessed by a flight of steps from the main street of Jerusalem, but in the 11th century, the entrance was moved its south side, where it remains to this day, including he double-doorway, its right section walled up since 1187. Only the original, carved lintels still recorded by Roberts had to be removed after an earthquake in 1927.
