Description:

This print is based on a watercolour by David Roberts entitled 'Hebron Mosque erected over the graves of Abraham and the Patriarchs' and completed in 1835. Apparently, this in turn was based on an initial sketch made at the Mosque by a Mrs Bracebridge. According to Jewish, Christian and Muslim tradition, the sanctuary at Hebron houses the graves of Abraham, his wife Sarah and their family. To Jews, it is the second holiest site after Jerusalem. Muslims revere the site because of its associations with Abraham and view the city of Hebron as one of the sacred cities of Islam. Formerly prosperous as a glass-manufacturing centre and hajj staging post, Hebron's fortunes declined in the 19th century due to cheap glass imports and the rerouting of the hajj caravan from Damascus to Transjordan.
