James Robertson (1813, London-1888, Yokohama)
Robertson's photographs of the Crimean War represent an important chapter in his career. The Crimean War was the first war in history to be extensively covered by press correspondents. The photographs taken by James Robertson and Roger Fenton put them in the ranks of the world’s first war photojournalists. James Robertson’s first photographs related to the Crimean War were actually taken in Istanbul. After England’s declaration of war on 27 March 1854, British and colonial forces dispatched to the front by sea began gathering at Selimiye in Üsküdar and neighbouring districts in April and May.
