Description:

With the political developments of the 19th century, interest in the East increased steadily in the western world. Everything belonging to the East was the centre of interest for western observers. As a result, close to 160 artists visited Istanbul in the 19th century. Pascal Sébah (1823-86) was a pioneer photographer who worked in Istanbul. Sébah opened a photography studio known as "El Chark " in Pera in 1857. The studio's most successful period started with the Vienna Universal Exhibition in 1873. Sébah formed a partnership with Joaillier Polycarpe in 1885. In 1899, the two partners bought Abdullah Frères's archives. For the Vienna Universal Exhibition in 1873, Pascal Sébah prepared The Ottoman Clothing Album to be exhibited at the Ottoman Stand.
