The first postmaster's office in Tunis, 1892
Tunis, Tunisia
Musée des Postes, Télégraphes et Télécommunications
19th century
Wood, paint, gold leaf
The objects assembled in this room all date to the late 19th century and belong to a set of urban Tunisian furnishings. These articles were all part of Tunis' first municipal postmaster's office. They consist of four chairs and a bench in painted wood, centred around a two-layered desk, painted in a floral motif on a pale blue background. Behind, a shelving unit, painted in the same style. This furnishing set shows evidence of traditional Tunisian, Turkish and various European influences.
