Description:

In June 1848 revolution broke out in Wallachia, aiming to liberate the country from the Ottoman sovereignty. Prince Bibescu was deposed and a provisional government was installed. As a result, the sultan sent an army to Wallachia. The Ottoman army entered on the Romanian territory in July and the Porte’s representative, Suleiman Pasha, began negotiations with the Romanian revolutionary government. This chromolithograph is part of a series of German chromolithographs depicting episodes from the Revolution that took place in Wallachia in 1848. It shows the entrance of Süleyman Pasha, the Porte's envoy, accompanied by a part of his army of 20.000 soldiers, in Giurgiu, a port on the Danube, after having crossed the river. He is received by a Romanian delegation.
