Description:

In 1848, Ion Ghica was the envoy of the Wallachian revolutionaries to Istanbul, where he remained after the suppression of the revolution. He created connections among the Ottoman officials, being appreciated by Reshid-Pasha (Grand Vizier from 1854), and became a supporter of the Romanian Principalities’ union under Ottoman sovereignty. A former journalist, he devised the project (not realized) for an economic and literary periodical, published in all the languages spoken in the Empire. In 1854 he was appointed governor of the island of Samos, where he took measures against piracy and founded several schools (a middle school, an agricultural school, a marine school and a girls’ institute). His activity earned him the title of “prince”(bey) of Samos, which he received from sultan Abdülmecid in February 1856.
