In 1826, Victor Rousseau, French artist living in political exile in London, was hired by Augusto Ferreira Pinto Basto, son of the Vista Alegre Factory’s founder. Regarding the artistic aspect, his hiring allowed for the introduction of new models and decorations, into the eclectic and romantic spirit of those times, and was essential in providing Vista Alegre’s portfolio with a new aesthetic and formal wealth and exuberance. Along with his pedagogical and artistic contribution in the Factory, Victor Rousseau also left as a legacy an interesting drawing album. The drawing, with scenes from the Factory representing the Aveiro Estuary and river Bôco, calls our attention to the specificities needed for the implementation of an industry in the 19th century. The proximity of the estuary represented not only abundance of water, but also offered easy routes for transporting raw materials and other commodities.
