Over the course of the centuries-long existence of Macedonia in the shadow of the Ottoman Empire there was apparent reflection of Oriental-Islamic influences in its arts and crafts. This also applies to the jewellery of Macedonians and all other ethnic communities. In the east of Macedonia, young women and brides within the Vlach population used to wear exquisite articles of adornment in the area of the temples. This type of jewellery was called funda. It was usually in trapezoid or semi-oval shape. Funda was made in filigree technique richly adorned with lace and tiny silver coins.
