Description:

Coin struck in 1903 under Mulay Sultan ‘Abd al-‘Aziz al-Hasan I (r. 1894 to 1908) at the mint in Fez. For a century (1800-1900) the ‘Alawid sultans struck coins in the workshops of Fez, but due to the economic crisis at the time, gold was unavailable so most coins were of silver, bronze or other common metals – although the technique remained the same, with the metal poured into moulds. The patterns on the face and on the back vary between the star with eight points (Solomon ring) and the indication of the place of mint.
