About The Lebanese University, Beirut
1883
The Medical school at the Université Saint Joseph (USJ) was established by the French state in 1883. The French state provided funding, a curriculum, and professors. Later that same year, following an agreement between the Jesuits and the French government, the Institute of Medicine opened on the university's campus. This was later followed by the opening of many other institutes, such as the faculties of law, economics and management, and literature. On 6 October 1888, the French government recognized the institute as part of a Faculty of Medicine. In 1889, when the school of pharmacy was founded, it was renamed as the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy.
