Description:

The descendant of an Armenian family that migrated to Venice at the beginning of the 19th century, Vittoria Aganoor Pompilj authored poems that were translated during her life into English, French and Spanish. She corresponded with many international literary figures and was a member of the International Arbitration and Peace League of Perugia (Società per la pace e l'arbitrato internazionale di Perugia), founded in 1892. In 1870, the British trade unionist Randal Cremer (Nobel peace laureate in 1907) founded the International Arbitration League, which –among other things – protested British intervention in Egypt and imperialism.
