In the spring 1816, a large Anglo-Dutch fleet headed by Admiral Lord Exmouth forced the three Ottoman regencies of the so-called “Barbary Coast” (the coastline of Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli; “Barbary” comes from “Berber”, the name given to the original people and culture of North-West Africa) to release Christian captives and to sign agreements over the abolition of corsairing, or privateering, and the enslavement of captives. In August, the Anglo-Dutch fleet returned to Algiers and made additional demands to the Turkish regent, who refused to comply. Lord Exmouth then ordered a heavy bombardment that destroyed the Algerian navy and part of the city of Algiers.
