Description:

In the 18th century the Kingdom of Naples and the Regency of Algiers were among the countries that competed for the control of trading routes in the Mediterranean and that participated in privateering. Only in 1856, by the Declaration of Paris, did Great Britain and most of other major European countries (with the exception of Spain) declare privateering illegal. By the time, Algeria had already become a French colony. The French military occupation of Algeria had in fact started in 1830.
