During the second half of the 19th century, “friendly societies” flourished in Italy (especially in Central and Northern Italy). They predated trade unionism and were an important element of Italian social life.
The Female Friendly Society (Società di mutuo soccorso femminile) of Cremona was created in 1863. It mostly comprised factory workers such as spinners and other workers in textile industry, but also included craftswomen like self-employed dressmakers, and even a few teachers.
