The historical photos, belonging to Enrico H. Giglioli's collection, were collected by the Florentine naturalist during his travel around the world in 1865–68 on the Magenta's steam corvette, with the purpose to start diplomatic and commercial relations. The "genre" images seem to be created "ad hoc" to represent human diversity along the different ages. The ethnographic photographs in the Giglioli's collection are part of the historical archive of the Pigorini Museum, and are very important for the history of anthropological science and history of photography. The origins in terms of scientific activity and conservation of Museo Nazionale Preistorico Etnografico "Luigi Pigorini" in Rome, can be traced back to the foundation in 1875 of the "Royal National Museum of Prehistory and Ethnography in Rome" within the buildings of the Roman College.
