Description:

In 1890, political pressure from Italian Prime Minister Francesco Crispi secured construction of the cruiser Bascir for the Moroccan Navy for the Fratelli Orlando shipyards located in Livorno (Italy), winning against French competitors.
The Bascir was the first cruiser built by an Italian shipyard for a foreign navy after Italian unification in 1860. It was delivered to Morocco in 1894. Among its amenities was a hamam (in Western Europe often known as Turkish Bath), expressly requested by the buyer.
The Fratelli Orlando shipyards also built a yacht for the Khédivé of Egypt.
