Description:

This decree imposed a heavy tax on foreign ships that fished corals near Algerian shores, while exempting French ships. The decree was translated into Italian in Livorno, an active coral fishing port town that was badly affected by this ruling. Coral fishing was an important economic activity in the Mediterranean. Algeria was the main fishing area for corals, especially after the depletion of Sardinian coral.
