1878
At the International Exhibition in Paris, 1878, the Algerian Pavilion was designed by the architect M. Wable, who was appointed by General Chanzy. The building represents one of the greatest proofs of French colonisation policy. The front-door, four metres wide, is a copy from the ‘Ubbad Mosque of Sidi Bumadyan in Tlemcen, and is richly decorated with enamelled majolica and arabesque decorations. The decorations of the minaret echo the tower in ruins from the mosque of Mansoura, 1,200 square metres wide. The pavilion was meant to show the productive potential of the colony to the French capitalists.
