Description:

In 1911, right before the beginning of Italy’s colonial war in Libya, an expert in sulphur mining, Ignazio Sanfilippo, headed a mission to Libya to look for mineral resources (in particular, for sulphur mines). The mission was sponsored by the Libyan branch of the Banca di Roma (one of the most important Italian banks, which supported Italian colonial expansion in Libya), and it was encouraged by the Italian government. In 1910, Sanfilippo had already headed another Italian mission to Libya. He had been secretly charged by the Minister of Foreign Affairs to look for sulphur mines and the Banca di Roma had helped organising the mission.
