Description:

Stefano Ussi lived between Florence and Rome and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Florence before enrolling as a volunteer in the first Italian War of Independence, during which he was taken prisoner by the Austrian troops. In 1875 Italian King Vittorio Emanuele II sent an embassy to Morocco which included the writer Edmondo De Amicis and the painters Ussi and Cesare Biseo. The innovative international relations policy of the young Sultan Mulay al-Hassan fostered relations with the Italian King. During his trip, Ussi sketched drafts on Arab every-day life scenes which later inspired his larger paintings.
