The construction of the Great Synagogue in Tunis had a long and complicated history. In 1883, the Bey granted a plot of land on which to build the temple to the Italian Jewish physician and president of the Alliance Israélite Universelle of Tunis, Giacomo Castelnuovo. However, the synagogue was ultimately built on a different lot, acquired thanks to a private donation. In the first years of the 20th century, different projects were discussed. The synagogue was finally built in the 1930s.
Leone Moreno (Tunis 1852 – Tunis 1950) was a successful Italian entrepreneur. He belonged to a Jewish family that had migrated from Livorno (Tuscany) to Tunis around 1830. He was awarded honours both by the Italian King (Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Corona d’Italia) and by the Bey of Tunis (Nichan Iftikhar).
