Constantinople, 9 August 1848
Italian communities abroad actively supported the movement for Italian national unification known as “Risorgimento”. The Italian community in Constantinople raised funding to donate a cannon to the Kingdom of Sardinia, which in 1848 was at war with the Austrian Empire. After the Kingdom of Sardinia’s army was defeated, conflicts between the most moderate wing of the nationalist movement and the republicans (supporters of Giuseppe Mazzini) broke out and the Kingdom of Sardinia’s authorities started to persecute the latter.
