Description:

The Dante Alighieri Society – created in Italy in 1889 and still in existence ‒ is aimed at promoting Italian language and culture abroad; its Tunisian branch was established in 1893. In Tunisia the Dante Alighieri Society devoted its energies into promoting schooling and supporting school attendance. One should consider, in this regard, that the Italian community at the time was composed of workers, miners, and labourers and included several destitute members. The students’ benevolent fund of the Società Dante Alighieri (Patronato scolastico) was created in 1898 and was aimed at supporting school attendance of destitute children, by providing free books and clothes.
